From demonstration to commercial development
Verdant Isles, a joint venture established by Verdant Power and Duggan Brothers, has advanced a tidal-energy development within the Morlais Demonstration Zone off Anglesey, Wales. Its 5 MW project secured a Contracts for Difference award in September 2023, supporting the commercial pathway for an initial phase.
A shared tidal-energy development zone
Morlais is managed by Menter Môn and is consented for up to 240 MW of tidal-generation capacity across the wider zone. Verdant’s involvement brings experience in project development, resource assessment, technology deployment, grid integration, and commercial planning. The award represents a development milestone rather than an operating-power claim.
Shared infrastructure for commercial deployment
Menter Môn’s Morlais development zone is located off Holy Island, Anglesey. The wider scheme has potential capacity of up to 240 MW and provides shared infrastructure so individual developers can deploy tidal devices in designated berths and connect to the electricity network.
Consent and phased delivery
The scheme received consent from the Welsh Government and Natural Resources Wales in December 2021. Its development pathway moves from consent through onshore infrastructure construction to phased device deployment, with environmental monitoring intended to manage risk and assess effects.
Verdant’s commercial pathway
Verdant Isles secured a 5 MW Contract for Difference in the UK’s 2023 Allocation Round 5. In 2024, Verdant developed a partnership with Inyanga Marine Energy Group for engineering, procurement, construction and installation, together with long-term operations and maintenance. This connects Verdant’s project-development experience with commercial delivery capability.
