The CORE Project
St. Lawrence River – Cornwall, ON

Through the Cornwall Ontario River Energy (CORE) Project,
Verdant Power Canada will generate clean renewable energy from the natural currents of the St Lawrence River near Cornwall, Ontario. Ultimately the project could generate up to 15 MW of power locally.

The CORE Project began in 2007 with the commencement of a Phase 1 pilot demonstration of Verdant Power’s Free Flow Kinetic Hydropower System in a continuous-flow river setting. During 2006 – 2008 Verdant Power successfully demonstrated this technology in a tidal setting through the RITE Project in New York City’s East River.

Phase 1 of the CORE Project will also demonstrate an updated turbine deployment and anchoring methodology designed for enhanced operational and cost effectiveness.

CORE Project Phases

Phase 1 – Demonstration Pilot (2007 – 2010):

  • Site analysis and resource assessment
  • Regulatory review and permitting for pilot operation
  • Test deployment of two simulated turbines (non-rotational) including updated anchoring system
  • Short-term (~2 months) test of two operational pre-commercial turbines (5-meter diameter rotors, 60-80 kW capacity each)
  • Long-term (~7 months) demonstration of two operational pre-commercial turbines connected to local grid

Phase 2 – Commercial Field Build-Out (2010 – 2012):

  • Regulatory review and permitting for commercial operation
  • Staged installation of commercial turbines for up to 5 MW of capacity (long-term project plan includes two additional 5 MW installations to achieve full 15 MW potential)
  • Commercial delivery of energy to local grid or customer(s)
